What’s new on Gmail?

1 03 2007

Just launched!

Get mail from other accounts
Now Gmail can check for the mail you receive at your other email accounts. You can retrieve your mail (new and old) from up to five other email accounts and have them all in Gmail. Then you can even create a customized ‘From:’ address, which lets you send messages from Gmail, but have them look like they were sent from another one of your email accounts. Please note that you can only retrieve mail from accounts that have POP3 access enabled. Learn more

This feature is currently only enabled for a limited number of users. We’re working on making it more available soon. Look for it in the ‘Accounts’ tab in Settings.

I guess I am just not one of the limited users – but I am guessing that soon they will enable it for everyone.

I’ve started to use the new feature of reading other POP3 account emails through Gmail in the last two days and let me tell you it is a fantastic tool. The thing I like most about it is the auto tagging of these messages to distinguish them from your normal gmail messages. Ohh yeah, and spam filter works on these messages too. So if a spam is sent through the pop3 account and gmail pulls it, it goes directly to the gmail spam folder. I’ve been struggling to find a way to read my pop3 messages through Firefox so I only use one tool for all online activities but couldn’t find something decent and used Thunderbird instead. Now with this feature, although not very new on the net since other web based email services were offering it for years, I got what i was looking for. me very happy 🙂
